The Laser optical thickness measurements based on laser triangulation is a widely used technology in the non-destructive monitoring of flat products.
The F5500 measuring system represents an interesting alternative to radiometric systems due to the rather simple and compact measurement setup, the independence on the chemical composition of the material to be measured, as well as the comparatively low acquisition costs and maintenance efforts. Furthermore, topics such as radiation protection and time consuming authorization issues became obsolete. However, what seems to be a simple and easy measurement solution at the first glance holds a number of challenging difficulties.

Laminated cores based on electrical steel (silicon steel) are used for transformers or rotors and stators of electrical motors. The base material of the cores is coated with an insulation varnish to increase the electrical resistance, the eddy current resistance and also to protect them against corrosion. The coating process is done in a continuous process before cutting and punching of the single parts of the core. The thickness of the insulation layer is very important for the quality of the core. In the past e.g. paper was used which results in a bad stacking factor and limited the maximum temperature of the core. Nowadays, mainly coatings related to the AISI classes C3, C5 and C6 are used. The benefits of any manual or automatic coating process control highly depend on the measurement accuracy of the layer thickness gauge. The paper concentrates on information about the MESACON´s F2800 layer thickness measurement system, improvement of customers coating process, benefits and customers experience.

ThyssenKrupp Electrical Steel India Private Limted a wholly owned subsidairy of Thyssen Krupp Steel, Duisburg Germany, was formed in September 2000.

To optimize the entire process of its coating plant ThysseKrupp Electrical Steel decided to order three specialized coating gauges from Mesacon Messelektronik Dresden GmbH – with adaptation to measure organic and inorganic layers down to 0.5 microns. In the beginning of December 2009 the layer thickness measurement system F 2800 was handed over to the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Work. The order dealt with by Mesacon Messelektronik GmbH Dresden included drawing up client-specific plans of the gauge and manufacturing it.

The measurement system started its operation successfully at the coating plant. It measures Primer -and Finisher – Thickness on both sides of polymer coated strips. The coating plant was delivered by Fata Hunter.

After a continuously growing success during the past years, MESACON has accomplished one of its biggest orders in June this year. Already in spring 2008, the company prevailed successfully against strong competitors and received an order from the OEM world market leader SMS-Siemag to deliver 17 gauges for the largest enterprise of the Russian steel sector – Magnitorsk Iron and Steel Work.

Since 1956 and today more than 11 years under the name of MESACON, the company produces industrial-suited isotope and x-ray gauges made in Germany to measure strip, plate and layer thickness in hot rolling, cold rolling and subsequent processing lines.
